  14. BBS Magazine now prints an annotated list of BBS systems derived
  15. from updates to the USBBS list for the last three months. Updates
  16. made to BOBsBBS (916-929-7511) or created by USBBSUP.EXE are the
  17. only updates considered.
  18.  
  19. The "A-List" contains all the information from the USBBS list
  20. *plus* the FOCUS and COMMENT lines entered by the updaters.  This
  21. makes it a very valuable list for callers searching for a board
  22. with a particular focus.
  23.  
  24. BBS Magazine is published monthly and is available wherever
  25. magazines are sold, or by calling 800-822-0437. Email

  30. Well, not really, but...  On January 27, 1995, my wife, Madeline,
  31. gave birth to our first child -- a girl named Dalen Elizabeth.  As
  32. those of you know who have children, this has greatly reduced the
  33. time that I have to spend on the USBBS list.  As we get to know
  34. our daughter better, we will settle into a routine.  Until that
  35. time, please bear with me.  The list is done in my spare time and
  36. I have less of that now!

  40. Mark Robbins of Second Sanctum in Dallas/Ft. Worth has
  41. volunteered to be the FIDO distribution point.  Mark also
  42. produces the original Dallas/Ft. Worth BBS list.  Here is the

  84. reach the USBBS.

  88. Recently, I have been considering ways to make the USBBS list more
  89. accurate and easy to update.  I know that there are thousands of
  90. BBS lists being kept out there.  Many of the local list keepers
  91. verify BBS's continued existence.  Something that I feel is one
  92. of the shortcomings of any list.
  93.  
  94. The proposal is to create an easy way for listkeepers to reformat
  95. their lists for submission to the USBBS national BBS list each
  96. month.  This has the advantage of gaining national exposure for
  97. the boards on the list and gives our national readers exposure
  98. to more BBS systems.
  99.  
  100. The boards on the list would have to meet the minimum requirements
  101. for posting to USBBS.  Thus, the listkeeper would have to collect
  102. the basic information, at a minimum.  This information includes:
  103.  
  104.     - Phone number including area code
  105.     - City, State
  106.     - Sysop's REAL Name
  107.     - BBS Software
  108.     - Modem Speed and type
  109.     - BBS Name
  110.     - Disk Space devoted to the BBS
  111.     - Number of nodes (phone lines)
  112.  
  113. I would provide, as my part of the process, a free formatting
  114. program which would format from a text version of the local list
  115. to the submission format for USBBS.  The edition field on the USBBS
  116. list would contain an indication of the source list from which
  117. the information was taken.  A list of listkeepers would be
  118. provided along with the other information in the USBBSxxx.ZIP.
  119.  
  120. More details would have to be worked out, but, I think this idea
  121. has some potential -- especially in getting BBS's deleted from
  122. the list when they are down.  Tell me what you think.

  124. As you can see from edition 129, I have made arrangements with
  125. the first of the local listkeepers.  This listkeeper decided to
  126. format the entries since he already had the software to do so.

  132. BOBsBBS supports a set of special ID's which are for downloading
  133. the USBBS list ONLY.  Here they are:

  138. USBBS XMODEM        Xmodem-Checksum
  139. USBBS CRC           Xmodem-CRC

  142. These ID's have no passwords and go through a special script
  143. which starts the download immediately after logon.  To help
  144. you automate your downloads, here are the phrases to wait
  145. for and the responses to enter:
  146.  
  147. WAIT FOR                      ENTER
  148. Graphics                      <Enter>
  149. LAST name                     {id};;
  150. Protocol starts immediately   start protocol download
  151.  
  152. Wait approximately 1 second after detecting each phrase.
  153.  
  154. Notice that there is a set of two semi-colons (";;") after
  155. the {id}.  This by-passes the password prompt.  You MUST
  156. enter this or you will get the "PASSWORD" prompt.  For
  157. example, you would enter "USBBS ZMODEM;;" in response to the
  158. "LAST name" prompt.

  160. The connection is terminated immediately after the download
  161. is completed.

  166. The following are some thoughts about the USBBS National BBS
  167. list.  It has been around for a long time in about the same
  168. format.  But the BBSing and communications worlds are
  169. changing rapidly and the list must keep up with those
  170. changes.
  171.

  176. -- Expiration of BBS's on USBBS

  178. One of the major problems I have with the list is finding out when
  179. boards go out of existence.  They do this quite often and without
  180. notice.
  181.  
  182. I am seriously considering expiring boards which have not been
  183. updated within 6 months.  What are your thoughts?
  184.  
  185.                   --==[[  RELEASE SCHEDULE ]==--
  186.  
  187. This is a release schedule for USBBS for the next several
  188. months.  The list is released on the last weekend of the
  189. month, unless there is some reason to revise this schedule.
  190. Here are a couple of known exceptions:
  191.  
  192. - If the first of the next month is on a weekend, the list
  193.   is released on that weekend.
  194. - If the last weekend of the month is a holiday weekend, the
  195.   list distribution will be adjusted.
  196. - If I will be out of town or otherwise occupied on the release
  197.   weekend, the list distribution will be adjusted.
  198.  
  199. The list is usually available sometime on Sunday afternoon of the
  200. release weekend.  If you want to avoid long distance calls, I'd
  201. suggest that you call Sunday after 6p, Pacific Time.  Of course,
  202. since this is my hobby, there are no guarantees.
  203.  
  204. All revisions for the list should be in by the Monday before
  205. the release date to help assure that I get them and add them
  206. to the list.  Although some parts of this effort are automated,
  207. much is manual.  I cannot guarantee that I will be able to get
  208. revisions received after Monday into the next list edition.
  209.  
  210. PLEASE NOTE:  Because I do this for free, I reserve the
  211. right to change this schedule without notice.  Notices about
  212. distribution are posted on BOBsBBS (916-929-7511).  Sorry
  213. for any inconvenience this causes.

  215. SYSOPS, please note:  I sometimes have difficulty reaching
  216. the remote update points before the release date.  If the
  217. board is down or constantly busy, I may not be able to
  218. collect the information before the update for that month.

  220. will be considered for the next edition of the list.
